“If you’re not growing, you’re dying”. Sounds a touch morbid.
“If you’re not moving forward, you’re moving backwards”. That defies the laws of motion but whatever.
These clichés regarding business growth show the pressure on you as a business owner always to be pushing ahead. You want your business to grow. Who doesn’t? No one says “Okay, I’m good. Stop buying my stuff now”.
But if we all want our business to grow year in and year out, then why are businesses at a stand-still?
I’ll tell you why…FOCUS.
Not a lack of focus, mind you. In fact, I think most business owners like yourself have no problem with focus in and of itself.
The problem is that you’re focused on the wrong things!
It’s impossible to achieve success when you’re focusing on the wrong areas.
Here are 6 things you must STOP focusing on if you want your business to experience new found success.
1: The Future
How can it be that looking ahead prevents you from growing? The answer is actually quite simple: when you’re looking ahead, you stop looking at what needs to be done TODAY. Focus on the present. Success comes one day at a time.

2: Your Competitors
Guess what? They don’t think about you as much as you think about them. When you focus on competitors, you end up becoming a generic version of them. Look outside of your industry for new ideas and inspiration. No one ever shook up their marketplace by focusing on doing everything their competition does.
3: Your Fears
It’s obvious why focusing on your fears is a bad idea. You can’t be productive when you’re afraid to move forward. This year, create a specific agenda for your business. Don’t put “fears” on your agenda. You don’t have time for them.
4: Current Trends
Whenever a new year rolls around, people start predicting what’s coming. Be less interested in following trends and more interested in setting them. After all, a trend is a sign that everyone is moving in the same direction and a sign that you should do something different.

5: Your Business
What?? How can you grow your business without focusing on it? Well, obviously you need to focus on it, but you’d be wise to spend more time focusing and working on yourself. Your business can and will only grow to the extent that you do!
6: New Ideas
While it’s true that you are only one good idea away from massive success, the trap most people fall into is spending most of their time on ideas and not enough time on action. You want your business to experience massive growth this year? Fewer ideas and more action is your key to success.
Where you focus will determine where your business goes in the future. Remember to take it one day at a time and remember that while you have a list of great ideas and great intentions…action is what will make your dreams a reality.
I’ll leave you with this poem for 3 reasons. First, it drives home my point about action. Second, it’s amazing. And last, I’m probably the only person who has a shared a poem with you today.
VICTORY (By Herbert Kauffman)
You are the man who used to boast
That you’d achieve the uttermost,
You merely wished a show,
To demonstrate how much you know
And prove the distance you can go…
Another year we’ve just passed through.
What new ideas came to you?
How many big things did you do?
Time…left twelve fresh months in your care
How many of them did you share
With opportunity and dare
Again where you so often missed?
We do not find you on the list of Makers Good.
Explain the fact!
Ah no, ’twas not the chance you lacked!
As usual – you failed to act!
