There’s one word I’m not fond of when it comes to success and achievement. I’m talking about the word “IF”.

When a person is talking about why they haven’t achieved something and they begin the sentence with “If” you can be assured that every word that comes after it is an excuse.

IF things were different…
IF I had more money…
IF I knew more people…
IF my parents had taught me about…
IF I was lucky…
IF this person hadn’t done me wrong…
IF the economy…
IF I had the resources to…

All of these could be summed up to “If my circumstances were different”. A thought like this is dangerous yet the majority of people think this way.

Your current situation and circumstance is not permanent. It’s detrimental to your achievement if you believe that it is.

Your thoughts lead to your decisions which influence your actions. Until you accept the fact that your current circumstances can be changed by you, don’t expect things to change. Sitting around waiting for things to change is not a strategy for success.

Now, I understand that in some cases a persons circumstances were not brought on by themselves. Some people are born into extremely poor situations. That’s not their fault, however they don’t have to stay in that situation.

Your decisions may not have put you in your current situation but they can get you out!

The hard truth is that you are exactly where you want to be. You’re comfortable with your excuses and are willing to live with them in exchange for your success.

You can’t achieve [fill in the blank] because of [insert excuse here]. People become attached to their excuses. They fall back on them.

That’s the problem with excuses, they’re always there.

When the day comes that you’ve run out of time to achieve your dreams, you’ll realize that all you have is your excuse. I hope it’s worth it.
